Read Me for SFC3net Generations at War 2.0

Introduction
---------------------------------------

This is a file designed to install files into Starfleet Command #3 to either play on the SFC3net online server, online at Gamespy (provided your opponents also have this file installed), or single player. It includes authorized Taldren BETA materials, modifications to systems such as weapons, power, hull, scripts and executables. It also includes a large number of models available to each race. General model credits have been included in this Zip file; detailed credits can be viewed within each model folder.

This mod was developed for a number of reasons and includes the following philosphies:

First, it is designed for the trek fan. What I have done is try to reproduce as many trek cannon ships and those from other games as possible. Thankfully, the tools which Taldren provided to us serve us well in this case. As do the numerous ships
which are out there by the modeling community which helps us tremendously. Whether its the K'Tinga class ship, the Connie refit or the valdore, I have tried my best to reflect what we see and feel during an eppisode.

Secondly, I am trying to reconstitute some of the feel of sfc2 in arcs, weapons damage and history. One of the many things done right with sfc2 was the level of detail which came with the game. I have tried to establish
when each ship came out for not only future campaign use, but to provide much of the history and back story which adds so much to the game. This beta will provide some detail, but as with all betas, I hope to add to the level
of detail and number of ships.

Finally, regarding racial philosophies is as follows:

Feds-> well rounded, shieldy, power hogs and expensive. High end technology as well.

klingons-> fast, light and manervable. Their ships are inexpensive and mass produced. This is in direct relation to their trek cannon history of being the old Soviet Union. Read in attrition units. Their weapons fire fast and recharge fast. They do not have the kick that Romulan or Federation ships have, however, they recharge much faster and are less expensive.

Romulans-> Slow, heavy hitting ships with high technology. Fewer ship hulls, however, those developed are very, very effective.

These are variations which i hope will bear out. Nothing is perfect, but this is an attempt to carry through what we see both in the television series and the flavor of the other Starfleet Command games.

Installation instructions:

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS AN ENTIRELY NEW MOD AND THAT INSTALLING IT WILL OVERWRITE OTHER INFORMATION.

Uninstall SFC3. Delete SFC3 folder. Reinstall SFC3. Install Beta patch 543/534b. Install Generations at War 2.0 mod.

If you are behind a NAT or firewall, make sure that in your sfc.ini file that under meta you have IPAddress=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the xs represent your IP address).

Run gen1.exe file. Do not interfere until it is finished.
When it's done, you're ready to play!

Special note- If you have trouble with game startup, try deleting folder Activision/SFC3/Assets/Cinema. Some systems having a smaller amount of RAM will benefit from this. The deletion of the introduction movies means less RAM is taken up in the game loading process. Systems with problems with RAM over-write should be rebooted first.

Uninstall instructions:

Simply run the SFC3 uninstaller and delete the sfc3 folder.

Most models I either found in the Dominion Wars mod by Micheal Pellington, TNZ by Scott Brown, or were on my hard drive. It should be noted that many of these models appeared in the first mod attempt by Chris Jones in December/January of 2002/3- and are done by MoonRaker, wicked zombie, dark drone, p81 or atrahasis. the kitbashes are made by the usual suspects of alec theorhaven, mackie or audril (plus a lot of other guys). Please see the notes below. They are not complete due to incomplete records.
It should also be noted that for every single model in this mod I have personally checked/scaled the hard points, did the UIs, firing arcs, glows and scaling (and most of the damage textures). It is a slow methodical process, but the detail is important. Enjoy.

These ships were partly converted first from Klingon Academy to SFC2 by Terahdyn's misc ship yards. Paul "NannerSlug" Seale finished the conversions for sfc3 by adding both the break model, damage textures, scaling, hard points and illums (basically everything but the initial textures and mesh). Atheorhaven redid and applied the Illum textures.

You need to be more specific. Where does it crash? Does it generate a message? If so, what does it say? Does it kick you back to desktop? Did you remember to patch the game? What version of DirectX do you have? Are you using Windows XP? If so do you use the horrible Service Pack 2?

i have XP, dunno bout the service pack. The game crashes when the progress line is ful and i have to click, on that moment it doesnt progress, gives no message and i have to restart my comp.

but it could be that i didn't patch it cuz i had to wait ages.

TO Guest: You should try a complete clean reinstall of SFC3, Delete the folder completely. Then Reinstall, ensure you are using DirectX ( (if not get it from the Microsoft Website). Install the Beta Patch you have, Then Install Generations At War. Right-click on the SFC3 Icon, and under the 'compatability' tab check 'Disable Visual Themes'. Now try the game.

I just wanted to thank everyone who had a hand in creating this mod. For a Star Trek fan, this is a little slice of heaven. Actually, it's a large slice of heaven! Great mod, but in the klingon campaign when attempting the 'Turning the tables' mission (destroying an asteroid base) the base isnt there, the ships are but no base... and in the misc campaigns (no story) there arent any missions (that i can find) ive flown round for ages and nothing.

Wher are the borg and the Space Amoeba monster and all the other goodies. all I see in Race is Feds Klingons Romulans and Dominion. Is there a Fifth selectiong i cant see are too retard how to select? Any help would be great thanks.

They are non-playable races. They show up in certain new conquest missions. Unfortunately, you cannot play them (unless, of course, you open your DefaultLoadOut.txt in the (Game Directoy)*****etsSpecs folder, and change the race to Federation, Klingon, romulan, or Card*****ian...)

PS: By default, (Game Directory) is Cstick out tonguerogram FilesActivisionSFC3

PPS: You can Also get to the Directory by right-Clicking on the SFC3 icon, then going to properties, the Find Target.

PPPS: (Yeah, I'm going a little overboard, but s what?) The DefaultLoadOut.txtcalls the race "politicalBase". This is all you should change

This is an awesome mod, I love all the new models and overall feel of the game. Only problem is theres a bug in the Obedience mission of the Klingon Campaign and theres no Freighters. frown

Simply right click on the shortcut to sfc3 (or sfc3.exe itself), go to the compatibility tab, and check "Disable Visual Themes." This will solve your problem.

I installed the mod but it isn't working. When I start SFC3 the intro's come, it is loading, and then instead of the menu screen, I get a white screen and my comp locks up! I've got Windows 98 and direct X 9.0c. Please help!

What more could you ask for??? Excellent sound effects and music....and all the best bits of all the SFC series. Its a shame SFC 3 wasnt made this good when it was released (this is how it should have been). Just as I had gotten bored of it, this mod makes the game fresh and interesting. Good job!!

The only problem I find is thaqt during conquest, once you have taken over a hex, it cant be strengthend. Any further missions in that hex cause you to lose it!

The only advice I can give, is to delete all SFC3 files and folders and do a fresh install of the game followed by the patch, then the mod. Borg campaigns will not work unless you enable their ships in the DefaultLoadOut.txt file as stated above. However, does changing that file create a conflict with multi-player?

The composer's name(klingon academy) is supposed to be Inon Zur, not Ion Zerr. (sidenote, he composed the music in Icewind Dale 1 and 2)

got problem in conquest - when I come over a hex with any mission, the game says - you have to play it or foreit. When I click on forefit, the game returns me on the "beginning" but I cant move, ´cause it says the same as on the hex with mission. But there is no mission on the hex...and in "normal" sfc3 (without mod), it doesnt even say that I have to play the mission, it is up to me to decide...it is really frustrating to play mission on every hex I came to. Any suggestions?

It wont install correctly look in the gaming forums error forums for sfc3 and youll see my thread please help me. It's worked before! I altered the sovereign and it was perfect. Then i got rid of it i dont remember why. now when i install it and look at add remove programs it shows last us was 2004?!?!?! i dont get it cause i just installed and its 2005! But standard SFC3 works but when i install the mod it says when the readme comes up in a DOS black screened window "error could not find" you know it said a list of could not find files from the mod?!?!! please help

First i wanna say great mod... the ship models are sublime...

Couple of issues though... more like constructive criticism... smile

Problems:

Why do the romulans still have those horrible plasma textures on their torpedoes, can't they be given access to the gravimetric torpedo textures?

Why do the Romulans have klingon disruptors more often that their own brand?

Suggestion:

Put the romulan or klingon voices over the borg ones... the romulans sound like the vorta and the klingons like the jem'hadar imo...

Just observations, nothing more... smile

Activision and Taldren should have done something with this kind of playability and dimension from the start. Sadly, they couldn't be bothered and continue to take the Trek gamer community for granted.

If anyone can help me it would be greatly apreaciated. I've got the patch. And my computer is pretty well top notch. Windows XP 98 Gigbytes of space a load of ram. But whenever I play the match in conquest it works for the first bit. But after about to or three battles I can't leave my sector anymore. Weird. Oh yeah It's a great patch. Taldren Should have done this when it came out.

many thanks for all the hard work and effort which has gone into making this addon. my son and i love startrek and this has givern us somthing else to bring us together, we are gratful.

the game works realy well, took us a little time to work out you need the build patch first, and no direct x fix patch. we have one problem and that is we carnt play the conquest bit, it just crashes after taking on a mission, does anyone no how to remedy this?

great mod, but i too got problems with some of the klingon campaign even with the 2.01 patch. also, im not sure if anyone else has or had this problem, the but the sp Enterprise model has been changed to the refit Enterprise. any help/advice would be appreciated!

I have Win XP, i uninstalled SFC3 and deleted the folder, then I reinstalled it (without installing the direct x fix), I installed the build patch 534b, I deleted the cinema folder and I disabled visual themes. Ok iv got 2 problems. 1.In the klingon campaign the enteprise appears as the refit enteprise.2 Why when I play the mission in the klingon campaign where you assult the rakelli does the base not appear. I can play the mission the rakelli ships r there but the base isn't. Can someone please halp me???

I had the same error message but found a fix, hope it works for you alls (I assume you're using Win XP). Right click on your SFC3 shortcut and go to properties, go to compatiblity, run it in compatiblity mode for Windows 2000 and make sure disable visual themes is checked, fire it up and see what happens. i think it has something to do with the patch but i don't believe it has anything to do with me as everyone has had the prob. I have tried the disable visual themes and such. This is an awesome mod you should really figure the problem out and tell me how to fix it.

Can someone please help me. Every time I play conquest mode and the stardate changes the game freezes up or takes a long time to change, I have a theory it has something to do with the number of vessels and ships being moved everytime the stardate changes. Can someone help me with this?

It is a great mod for the game, a shame it does not work for me. I like how it adds more missions, I get bored with the original SFC3 because there is only Scan and Distress call missions and they get really boring...

Nannerslug, how did you manage to compress .mp3 files? I tried virtually everything methods, I read even Dynaverse forums and nothing helped me out. It is said to make a CBR 128 kbit/s .mp3 file(s) and PUT it into SFCMusic.zip folder set without compression. I'm doing this all, but when I start the game I see cracked music or no music at all. Also mp3 files should be 44110 Hz, stereo and their names should match those in original archive, but that nothing helped me. I tried many codecs, e.g. LAME 3.96, Nero MP3 etc. Tell me plz, what are you doing and what program are you using? I noticed also that VALID mp3 for SFC3 have the same header (at the top of the file, when seeing mp3 file using any text editor), mines always have different ones. How to change that?

I'm having the same problem as several people here, where the freighters in the "Obedience" don't show up, and I can't progress through the rest of the campaign because of it. Sure, I can continue to do the Romulan and Federation campaign, but it's a frustrating glitch. I've updated to 2.0.1, but it didn't fix it. Any kind of solution would be very, very, very appreciated!!

It would help me to troubleshoot this issue if people could weigh in and say whether or not they've had this issue or not. If there is somebody who can get through the entire Klingon campaign without errors (especially if they can get through Obedience), it would let me know that it's a problem on my end, and not the mod's fault.

well it worked for me anyway; the problem was that the rakkely had been swap with the tolian for this mod. so the campaign can't find the proper ships. i copied the rakkely race lines from the original game and replaced the tollians.this fixes both missions.

hi, I ever have the same problem in the conquest mode...
when I forfeited a mission and was transfared to the next base i had to accept or forfeit another mission. but i can't, the button is still grey and i can't move.

Do you know how to fix the problem ?

I realize that a lot of people including myself have been or at least were having trouble with this mod's changes to the borg campaign. Namely the idea that as the borg you stand alone and have no bases to repair and resupply not to mention no safe haven. The only way so far presented to fix this is to adjust the settings in the DefaultLoadOut.txt so that cardassian ships show to be borg ships (or vice versa, I never tried it to be sure) and essential "pretend" your playing as the cardassians instead of the borg. But I would like to put forward a different solution that could prove challenging. Again, I have yet to attempt this but have done almost all the opperations individually and do not have any programming experience so I am unsure if this can be an addition to the mod.
First step, change the borg starting ship to a cube (or lesser based on what difficulty you choose) by edditing the character.txt in the (game directory)metaassetsserverprofilessingleplayer folder. You find the section under "// Starting ships for players (sorted by RACE)" There will be three of them each stands for the different difficulty levels. "[StartingShips/0" stands for easy, "[StartingShips/2" is hard.
Next step would be to change the weapons, systems, and shields configuration. This way you won't have to be able do it in game. Admittedly, I'm not really sure how to do this, but it's obvious with the ability to create new ships for the game changing the default payload shouldn't be hard for those in the know.
Final step would be to tweak any of the borg systems and weapons to your liking in proportion to how difficult/realistic you'd like the game to be. These files are in the (game directory)AssetsCommonSettings folder. The idea is to emulate the real stomping power of the borg. Like at wolf 359 a singular cube crushed an entire fleet without braking a sweat. Obviously, this was when the federation were still new to the borg, but it's not like the borg haven't gotten any weaker since then either. The destruction of the cube in "First Contact" was just a plot device really.
My reasoning for all of this (forgive my wordiness please) was to make sure I explained it all so that everyone could understand it, and offer what could be a very challenging way to play the borg. As a bit of a background story if it should be needed: The borg have managed send a solitary ship through to cardassian space using either time travel or an unstable worm hole in order to make one more attempt on the alpha quadrant.

Love the stuff. Love the new ships! But I wish you could keep the Borg as the 4th race and let the Cardassian, Dominion, etc. ships appear in place of pirate ships and the like. My only complaint. Awesome job, guys!
