Star Trek XI Announced on StarTrek.com - Official News

J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and direct the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety and sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. (Until a title is selected, we will usually refer to the project as simply "Star Trek XI.")

Although there isn't an official Paramount press release announcing the movie, it is a confirmed project under development with a 2008 release date targeted. Word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned "M:i:III." STARTREK.COM will keep you up to date on all official statements as they are released.

The proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.

Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, are cited as being producers on "Trek XI." This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendresen and overseen by Rick Berman. The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project.

This announcement is exciting news, and we look forward to following developments on this project every step of the way!

Sounds exciting, but will need excellent casting to pull it off successfully. Maybe an opportunity for a couple of unknowns or actors that have only limited experience. Could be a potential career maker for whoever gets the parts. This movie could also be another "Battlestar Galactica", going to tv series if it is done well. Maybe a little "re-imagining" might help the franchise, but not too much "re-imagining". It may even help if the actors selected would approach the parts of Kirk and Spock as if they never have even seen the series. That way everybody won't be comparing the new movie and characters to the original series.

Well... they've found an excellent actor to do superman haven't they? Just like the original one.... of course.. finding someone like Nimoy will be difficult...

Good idea for an script i think... but as the producer, well, i don't want to see an action movie. We have had enought action on the trekkers nemesis...

I do not think its a good idea for them to make a movie about the early years" of spock and kirk becuase them would have to find somebody that looks like kirk and spock which that would be hard to find or if them do it on computer it will cost millons of dallors! So it would be better if they would go past the nemesis movie!!!!!!

Listen...I, like the next man and woman love a bit of the old trek but this is a joke! A prequel about Spock and Kirk, there are so many film Idea's these producers have right under there noises! I could name a few but I not going to because those Producers get paid too much and have soooo much information and stories to work with that they should know better. hey I'm MARVEL fan but I've got to say every single last marvel film has been completely rubbish, come on. in the XMEN... all the XMEN are fighting in FULL THICK LEATHER SUITS!!! they would be sweating into there graves, superpowers or not! To this day I still think the leather jumpsuits are stupid and so is a Star Trek Prequel!!! DO NOT WASH STAR TREK DOWN THE DRAIN PARAMOUNT, LOOK AT ALL THE STORIES YOU HAVE USE YOUR HEADS PROPERLY AND COME UP WITH SOMETHING GREAT!! 1 more thing the HULK...WHO ON THIS EARTH IS DAVID KESSLER?!?!?! ITS DAVID BANNER, GET IT RIGHHHHHTTTTTT!!!!
